Living Life His Way: A Perspective on Faith

In the end, when the time has come, for the final curtain, will it be said, “I did it, His way?” Unfortunately, for many and even myself, on more occasions than I would like, like many we do things “our way.” Like the famous song sung by many and introduced by Frank Sinatra, “I did it myyyyyyyy wayyyyyyyy.” The more I learn and grow and discern truth in Scripture, it becomes glaringly more clear, His Way is constantly under attack.

There is a certain amount of pride that comes with the idea that we do things our way. Success feels good, as does rebellion in certain areas, power and control, is captivating. They say no one likes being told what to do. And there is some truth to that. Neither does anyone like to be under constant pressure to perform. So when you couple the idea that the Law is some sort of checklist that one must keep, it becomes less appealing. Especially, when it is put up next to a philosophy of do whatever you want.

However, most will agree that having certain parameters is necessary for a cohesive community. Now the debate begins, how far should those parameters reach? Who should get to dictate those boundaries? In today’s world regardless of where you live in it, you are living within the parameters of society. Those parameters are being established by governing bodies. The country you live in has laws that you must live under. This trickles down, State laws, city ordinances, even communities have bylaws dictated by HOA’s, work has codes of conduct even. In fact the home you live in with your family has unspoken rules as well as established understandings. Without the rule of law, there is chaos. Imagine six billion people all doing things their own way?

In the days Yahoshua (Jesus) walked to streets of Jerusalem He confronted a religious order. He did so on the premise of calling them out on their hypocrisy. Placing on the people a yoke none could bear. Taking the instruction of God and lacing it with human tradition and placing that tradition above the very Scriptures they taught. In the end causing the people undo hardship increasing the taxes levied, sacrifices required, offerings given, lining the pockets of the priests and religious counsels. Not much different than we see today in a lot of ways.

This verse in Acts 5 got me thinking: 39 “But if it is of God, you cannot overthrow it–lest you be found to fight against God.” Humanity will fight hard to keep their traditions. They will make excuses for it. Warp Scripture for it. Say it doesn’t matter in order to justify it. Rather than ask the question, “Is it of God?” If the answer is yes, then we better be found doing it, if the answer is no, we better weigh its consequences carefully. God left us with a pretty clear set of instructions, we better seek to understand them rather than make up our own.

The world is pulling for our attention in every–which–way possible. Human tradition, cultural tradition, family tradition, church tradition, individual tradition, are often at odds with God’s instruction. If we aligned ourselves with His ways we would find a set of traditions unparalleled in society. Leading to a genuine relationship with the Father based on Truth, His Word is Truth. John writes in the fifth chapter of his first epistle the following concerning Gods instructions.

2 By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and obey His commandments. 3 For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments. And His commandments are not burdensome. 4 For everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith.

What does it mean to overcome the world? It is the same as overcoming the flesh. We are not to count ourselves as citizens of the world any longer, once we come to faith in Messiah. We are a new creation and therefore become representatives of that Kingdom. Paul to the Romans writes: 6:11: “So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Messiah Yahoshua.” Later Paul writes: Romans 8:13: “For if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live.”

John defines sin this way in the third chapter of his first epistle, “Everyone who practices sin practices lawlessness (Torahlessness) as well. Indeed, sin is lawlessness” (living outside of Torah, or Gods instruction). John continues to drive home a point that Paul was trying to make to the Romans. “But you know that Messiah appeared to take away sins, and in Him there is no sin. No one who remains in Him keeps on sinning. No one who continues to sin has seen Him or known Him.” These all seem quite inline and incredibly opposed to how modern christians live today. For many say that the commands of God have been done away with, or worse, they ignore the commands of God outright.

To the Galatians Paul writes: Galatians 5:16: “But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.” Paul goes on to contrast the flesh vs. the spirit and caps his thought with this: Galatians 5:24: “And those who belong to Messiah Yahoshua have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.” Man has been fighting God’s instruction from the beginning in an effort to do things on mans terms. It is the same lie whispered in the garden by the serpent, the devil himself. If Satan can get you to question God’s word then he has you right where he wants you.

Proverbs is a wisdom book. You probably have heard the expression “Ancient Chinese Proverbs”. Well, the same can be said of the book of Proverbs in the Tanakh. Hear now an Ancient Hebraic Proverb, “Whoever turns his ear away from hearing the Torah, even his prayer is detestable.” This wisdom and truth. Do not fall to the temptation to dismiss God’s instruction. His Torah is the guardrails that keep you on the path of life, to keep one in the Way. Yahoshua said to Pilate, “So then,” Pilate said to Him, “You are a king, after all.” Yahoshua answered, “You say I am a king. The reason I have been born, the reason I have come into the world, is to bear witness to the truth. Every one who belongs to the truth listens to me.” Shortly before this interaction, Yahoshua is praying in the garden, “Sanctify them by the truth; Your word is truth.”

As much as I like music and even some of the classics sung by Frank Sinatra, the one song that makes me cringe every time is the song, “My Way.” Because when my final curtain closes and this part of my life is over, I want others to see in my and to say of me, “he did it, HIS way!” That in spite of all his flaws, he was always growing, always learning, and always trying to walk the Way of the Rabbi. Here is a remastered version I could probably sing along to.

I’ve traveled each and every highway

When i was a teen growing up in the foothills of Southern California, life was much different than today. The most advanced gaming system was a Nintendo. VCR’s were in competition with Beta Players, and cassette tapes were the method of choice for recording music. We listened to the radio all day hoping they would play our song at least once. Where i lived, life seemed slower, and communal. It wasn’t perfect but it felt like home.

The place i lived was a campground and it had T-Shirts that said, “Follow me to Follows Camp.” We wore them proudly every Friday night. To the skating rink, football games, or wherever a Friday night adventure would take us. We were as a pack of coyotes, loyal to each other, protective even. If one of us was in danger, or needed help, we were there. i remember one time some vandals mistreated a part of the campground. We called it the Little “Chapel of the Canyon.” We came together and we repaired it, good as new. “Follow me” was more than a catchy phrase for the campground it was a rallying cry of the community.

It was 167 B.C. The Maccabees, lead by the Priest Mattathias, and his sons, the main one being Judas, led a revolt. For what reason? Against the decree by King Antiochus IV Epiphanes that band covenant worship of Yahweh. King Antiochus IV, forced Hellenization on all the inhabitants of Jerusalem. Along with the surrounding area, now under the control of the Seleucid Empire. He desecrated the Temple in Jerusalem by sacrificing a pig on the altar. He outlawed, Sabbath observance, eating clean foods, daily sacrifices, essentially anything to do with Torah. Instead, he implemented Greek idol worship and killed any who resisted.

The Maccabees, lead by Judas, an expert in gorilla warfare, put on their “Follow Me,” t-shirts. They led a seven year military campaign for freedom. This is the origin of Hanukkah. Once they took out the Seleucid Empire, they tore down the idols, the pagan altar’s, and restored the Temple. Hanukkah is known as the Feast of Dedication, they rededicated the Temple of Yahweh and restored covenant worship.

In life we need community. We need a pack. We need a cause. In Ephesians we read Elohim’s heart, through Paul’s hand, on the matter. “Therefore remember that formerly you who are Gentiles in the flesh and called uncircumcised by the so-called circumcision. That done in the body by human hands. — Remember that at that time you were separate from Messiah. Alienated from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers to the covenants of the promise. You were without hope and without Elohim in the world. But now in Messiah Yahoshua you who once were far away have been brought near through the blood of Messiah.” (Ephesians 2:11-13)

Before we come into Messiah we are alienated from the commonwealth and the covenants. But once we enter through Messiah we join ourselves to the people of promise becoming one. As the letter to the Ephesians continues Paul writes about this truth. “There is one body and one Spirit. Just as you were called to one hope when you were called. One Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all. Who is over all and through all and in all.” When we enter into fellowship with Messiah, we put on His clothes, His Follow Me t-shirts. As Paul also writes, “Imitate me as I imitate Messiah.”

What does it look like to be part of the covenants of promise? We need to read the Torah to find out. The entire volume of Messianic writings point to the Torah. Just as the Torah points to the Messiah. If you want the full communal experience, you must put on the fullness of truth, His Word is Truth! Unfortunately, not many religious leaders today believe this. Although, they say they believe in Jesus. They follow a misunderstood and twisted understanding of Paul’s writings. They don’t see themselves entering into the covenants of promise. Only that they will receive the promises based on the new covenant. Which if studied clearly say, that the new is simply the old written on the heart. It becomes a desire not a compulsion.

Instead of Hellenization like the Maccabees, it is assimilation. Rather, than standing out, they blend in. Instead of denouncing pagan traditions they sprinkle them into the churches. Instead of calling folks back to the covenants of promise, they tantalize people with empty promises. Why empty? Because the promises come in covenant. They come in obedience.

When the angel came to Mary to tell her she had been chosen her response teaches us a great truth. Belief is displayed in obedience. Luke records this encounter in which Gabriel, an angel of Yahweh, tells her she will give birth to the Messiah. Mary at first is frightened and confused but in the end she says, “I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary answered. “May it happen to me according to your word.” Yahoshua, Jesus, is birthed from the covenant of promise, and calls us back to it. “Yahoshua went on to say, ‘You neatly set aside the command of God to maintain your own tradition.'”

What traditions are in focus for you? Are you even seeking the Way? Yahoshua says to us, “Come and See,” He says to us, “Follow Me.” Who are you following? As for me, i will follow Yahoshua, the Way, the Truth, the Life, as He declared. The Word made flesh. Did you know that the Torah is known as The Way, Path, and Instruction? Did you know that the Torah, Elohim’s Word is called the Truth? Did you know that Life comes through every Word of Elohim? This is the Way of the Rabbi.

Flee from idolatry

“And YWHW spoke to Moses, saying, ‘Speak to the poeple of Israel and say to them, I am YWHW your Elohim. You shall not do as they do in the land of Egypt, where you lived, and you shall not do as they do in the land of Canaan, to which I am bringing you. You shall not walk in their statutes. You shall follow My rules and keep My statutes and walk in them. I am YWHW your Elohim. You shall therefore keep My statutes and My rules, if a person does them, he shall live by them: I am YWHW.’” Leviticus 18:1-5

“These are the laws and the statutes that you shall be careful to do in the land that YWHW Elohim of your fathers, has given you to possess, all the days that you live on the earth. You shall surely destroy all the places where the nations whom you shall dispossess served their gods, on the high mountains and on the hills and under every green tree. You shall tear down their altars and dash in pieces their pillars and burn their Asherim with fire. You shall chop down the carved images of their gods and destroy their name out of that place. You shall not worship YWHW your Elohim in that way. But you shall seek the place that YWHW your Elohim will choose out of all your tribes to put His name and make His habitation there.” Deuteronomy 12:1-5

Have we as a church allowed the influences of the world to creep in on the things of YWHW our Elohim? Have we, as Israel, forgotten that our Elohim is jealous for us? i fear that as we embrace the traditions of man over the appointed Feasts of our Adonai, we are in a way doing as Israel did time and time again. We don’t possess the land, so i am not calling for violence or to take the measures outlined in the verses above. However, in a spiritual sense, i am saying, that we need to purge these things from our life as to not blend man’s tradition with Elohim’s statutes or His Feasts.

YWHW our Elohim is the same yesterday, today, and forever. As He revealed Himself through Yahshua, He didn’t somehow condone idolatry. He didn’t say, it was now okay to worship anyway we see fit. What He did do is affirm our need for a Saviour and dependance on the Holy Spirit in our lives. We cannot serve two masters. We are still to flee idolatry. We should be growing closer to YWHW our Elohim through Yahshua by the indwelling of the Holy Spirit and forming our worship of Him through His instruction. How we worship matters, it has always mattered, and it will matter when we see Him, shouldn’t we then focus our attention on the ways He has outlined for us?

Merry Christmas

The Advent season. A time of great tradition. It is widely celebrated in both the Christian culture and the secular culture. Although the secular culture doesn’t necessarily understand the significance of the Advent, they do enjoy their Christmas. They put up Christmas trees, decorate their houses with lights, go to or host holiday parties, exchanging gifts with one another in grand celebrations. When it comes to viewing things from the outside, one would think everyone is celebrating the exact same thing, they would be terribly wrong.

That is just it. When there is no difference in the celebration, is there a difference at all? When my unsaved neighbors put up their Christmas tree, what goes through their heads? Do they ever wonder where the tradition of the tree comes from? The origins of the evergreen tradition in the season? Do we, as Christians, as we set up our tree, talk about the significance of the tree? What does the tree stand for? When was it first introduced? Beyond the tree, how many nativity scenes do you have? When you pull them out of the box and set them up, do you talk about the story? Honestly? Or do you just set it up in a rush to get done so that you can enjoy the decor for the next month?

Wanna know what the world is talking about? Money. They are talking about money. Corporations are looking at the season, and they salivate at the profit margins. It is the season in which they go from the red to the black. In the retail world, that is from being unprofitable to profitable. It is why it is called “Black Friday.” When you buy those gifts for all your loved ones, do you stop to consider the significance of giving gifts at Christmas? When you tear open, those gifts, is a thought given to the greatest gift ever given? How long is that mentioned? For what part of the day is that dwelt upon? One hour on Christmas Eve? Depending on what day is Christmas, maybe one hour on Christmas day? For the Churchgoer.

Interesting how important it is to keep Christ in Christmas yet the amount of time spent truly being wrapped up in the actual Spirit is limited to a few Sunday’s, (keep it short) and a special service on the Eve of . . . But not too late! When Christmas lands on a Sunday, i have seen churches shorten services, combined them if they have multiple services in a day . . . Why? Because attendance drops if Christmas is on a Sunday. What does that tell you about keeping Christ in Christmas? Have you heard the statement about Black Friday? It goes something like this, “Because only in America do we wait in line and trample others for sale items one day after giving thanks for what we already have.”

You know what has become more important than Jesus? Tradition. Want to know what became more important to the religious leaders two thousand years ago? Tradition. Want to know what hasn’t changed? God’s opinion of man’s traditions. i am not saying it is terrible to have traditions, not at all. What i am saying is when those traditions become what we celebrate, when those traditions are the very thing we need in order to celebrate, it is that mentality that has led to how and what we celebrate at Christmas. If we look no different than the world, then we are no different. Make this year different. Maybe we all need to try a little harder to get in the spirit of the Advent . . . Without the influence of tradition, just once.

5 And the Pharisees and the scribes asked him, “Why do your disciples not walk according to the tradition of the elders, but eat with defiled hands?” 6 And he said to them, “Well did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written,

“‘This people honors me with their lips,
    but their heart is far from me;
7 in vain do they worship me,
    teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.’

8 You leave the commandment of God and hold to the tradition of men.”

9 And he said to them, “You have a fine way of rejecting the commandment of God in order to establish your tradition!” Mark 7:3-9

We might even consider the idea of transitioning from worldly tradition to the Feasts of Adonai. There are some amazing feasts described in Scripture and we are told to remember them. We are told to honor them. After all we are told to “seek first the Kingdom!” my awakening began in 2018. This year 2019, i was a bit more bold in my approach for all of the “Christian Holidays.” Easter was on the porch with its bags packed but Christmas, this one was the hardest. May i encourage you to explore the richness of the Feasts of YHWH and open your heart to the Way of the Rabbi.
